Editor's Verdict: Unlike one or two other foreclosures listings websites we could mention that put the word "Free" in their name, Freeforeclosuresdatabase.com really is free. And it's not free for a trial period, it's actually free for as long as you want to use it. Which is nice. This is possible because of the use of advertising on the website, though thankfully the adverts themselves aren't at all intrusive or overused and there are absolutely no annoying pop-ups to contend with. There are, however, pages and pages of links to apparently random products (eg. "Buy Poker Tables", "Horse Tack Trunks", "Blenders" etc ) but to find these you have to actually click on the links to the advertising pages, so they're not in any way intrusive. Obviously Free Foreclosure Database's thinking is that offering free access to foreclosure listings will maximize the number of people who are visiting their site and thus raise the value of their advertising space. A free foreclosure listings site is therefore theoretically self-sustaining. Best of all, you don't even have to register or give away any of your personal details. The exception is that if you want to receive free email updates of suitable new properties coming onto the market, they'll obviously need to have your email address. The search engine itself isn't quite as sophisticated and flexible as you'll find on the very best foreclosure listings sites, but it does the job. It's basically just a geographical search, but it does at least take minimum and maximum price into account as well, which is better than some paying sites will offer. The listings, as you would expect, are not quite as detailed or extensive as you will find on the best paying sites, but do include basic information such as location, home type, contact details and usually a photo. Obviously, there aren't a huge amount of extra features, but what do you expect? Most of the really handy extras you'll find on other foreclosures listings websites are accessible whether you're a paying subscriber or not, so you could quite conceivably use this site for your listings and leech off one of the others for free extras. For example, some such sites offer free access to information on local demographics for whichever area you're thinking of moving to, including crime, age, income and school data, which could help you fill in some of the blanks left by the listings information that's offered by Free Foreclosure Database. So if you play it clever you could conceivably get your listings for free and not miss out on the supporting features either. Assuming you're sneaky, that is. The downside of Free Foreclosure Database having to attract a huge number of visitors is that a lot of other potential buyers will be seeing the same foreclosure information you see. A free service, by virtue of its sheer accessibility, cannot offer the buyer the edge you get from having timely access to exclusive information. Which is, of course, what makes a lot of subscription sites worth paying for. That isn't to say that you won't find your dream house through a free site such as this, just that the competition to buy it is likely to be that much more intense. This is particularly the case in areas such as pre-foreclosures, where owners might receive hundreds of calls from interested parties within a few weeks of their lender initiating the foreclosure process. In this respect the fact that this website is free to anyone who shows up is both a good thing and a bad thing for the user. Sure, you don't have to spend forty bucks a month on subscription fees, but if you save thousands of dollars on buying a house you're hardly likely to resent paying for the privileged information that helped you get it. That being said, Free Foreclosure Database does exactly what it says on the tin. You can search through large numbers of foreclosure listings and it is absolutely free. The fact that sites like this exist can only be a good thing, both for users hoping to strike it lucky and because it raises the game for other rival sites, who will now have to offer something more in exchange for the money they charge. All of which is good news for the customer.
